Loved everything about Takayama Ouan. Location is very easy to access from the train station and quite central. Only 15-ish minute walk to any of the major landmarks you'd want to hit in Takayama. The onsens were awesome, both private and shared. The rooftop shared ones with the open air space in particular were amazing. There's free small ice creams in the evenings after your onsen, and in the mornings there's free Yakult. They serve free ramen in the evenings and the whole hotel shows up to participate, it's really nice. Breakfast at the hotel is varied and delicious. Many many options to suit everyone The self check in was a little confusing, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. I love that you put your shoes away in a locker and everyone in the hotel walks around in their socks or slippers and provided yukata.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights, booked a double room with queen bed which was on the 12th floor. The hotel is cosy and well decorated. The bed was super comfortable, and I really enjoyed the no shoes policy. Breakfast was delicious, with eggs being made regularly and a good variety in general. Private onsens are great, and it can be a good first experience for those who are not so used (especially good if you gave tattoos). The waiting time can be longer after 19:30, there was no wait when we visited at 18:30. If you don't have tattoos, do visit the 'public' one. It's bigger and nicer than the private ones, and the outside onsen is beautiful. I had a great time enjoying the hot water while looking at the starry sky! Overall we had a good stay and we would recommend this hotel.

An absolutely amazing onsen-hotel in central Takayama that way exceeded my expectations. The staff were friendly, the public areas of the hotel were very nice and with plenty of facilities, and the rooftop onsen (both indoors and outdoors, and both public and private alternatives) was exceptional! You could also see pretty much all of beautiful Takayama from the onsen (as well as from the upper floor rooms), which is a major plus, and as I mentioned at the start, location cannot get any better. The room itself is really good (and very well thought-out), especially when considering the price, and the bed was a significant improvement over the usual futon (yet kept the traditional look). I dare say that in this price category, and in this location, you cannot get any better!

An amazing onsen-hotel in central Takayama with a rooftop onsen that has an astonishing view of the town and surrounding area (in addition of being a pretty decent onsen in its own right, both indoor and outdoor, plus private alternatives to the main public facility). The view from the upper floor rooms is also exceptional, and as mentioned at the start, location almost cannot get any better. The room itself it pretty decent (with a minor caveat, see below), and with a bed that feels like a modern take on the traditional futon. Can also recommend the breakfast option. While I would not say there is no room for improvement, in this price category, and in this location, it deserves a 10/10!

Everything is good. The location is central, a short walk to the train station and nohi bus station. We got a top-floor room (just one level below the onsen) with a stunning view. We can use an outdoor private onsen for free (first come, first serve). There's lots of free stuff, i.e., free ramen service at night and free ice cream after dipping at the onsen. The amenities are complete, and they provide pyjamas too. The room size is medium size, adequate to cater to 2 pax with cabin-size luggage. The breakfast is superb—plenty of options, and all good, especially the tofu and french toast. Sadly we only stay for one night. We surely will stay here again when we come back to Takayama.
